The year is 1984, and on the rural East Coast of New Zealand “Thriller” is changing kids’ lives. Inspired by the Oscar nominated Two Cars, One Night, BOY is the hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic and Michael Jackson. {official site}
HIS review
Boy takes us on a pleasant trip back to the 80′s… via a young boy growing up in a small coastal New Zealand town. The hair do’s, the language (if you’re a New Zealander), the music and even the names (Chardonnay, Dallas and Dynasty to name a few). Lacking the ‘quirkiness’ found in Eagle vs Shark, Taika Waititi attempts a more mainstream movie. The child actors shine, making up the majority of the cast and doing well to carry the films more touching moments. There are plenty of comedic moments interspersed, although they do become a little repetitive. Boy is based on the short film Two Cars, One Night, but unfortunately it seems there wasn’t enough in this story for a full length feature. Luckily we are still left with an enjoyable (and short) movie. A special thanks to SBS and See Film First for the advanced screening!

HER review
Boy is a sweet little film, full of heart-warming, chuckling moments. However it was a bit weak and cringeworthy at times! Boy’s relationship with his father is the main focus of the film amongst a plethora of 80′s inspired music, fashion and pop icons. The child actors did a fantasic job making the film seem as real as possible. I would definitely recommend you to watch Boy but I don’t think you need to see it at the cinema to enjoy it.
