Solid points all around. I pretty much knew going in that Aronofsky was going to deliver the goods. He's such a brilliant, sophisticated filmmaker and it shows in each and every project he makes. He's not about big budget, special effects films hiding 'performance' nor does he rely on overly and unnecessarily complicated plots to get at the heart of every story - character. This is the sort of film Inception could have been in the hands of Aronofsky (there I said, Mr. Nolan). Not that I'm not a fan of Nolan's early films - he's just forgotten the the aforementioned "first steps" to any great film, the tangible, the truthful, and the discreet that lives in each and every one of us.

Portman was astounding and beside the emotional and psychological transformation she delivers is the very much overlooked physical performance. Some reviewers (I suppose they actually go to the ballet) criticized her dancing when in all actuality her work was no less transformative and expressive as say De Niro's weight gain for Raging Bull or Clooney in Syria. I just read that De Niro spent four months learning to speak Italian/Sicilian for The Godfather Pt2. Dedication to craft.

cheers->

Hello Clockworkmovies,

I've enjoyed reading your review of the film and in many ways agree with you - though with further thought would add that Kim Cattrall probably doesn't have much range beyond what we've already seen from her and as a result seemed waxen and devoid of emotion. There really is no mistaking the inherent, indelible accouterments of master filmmaker Roman Polanski tightly woven into this 2008 political thriller.

I'd like to invite you and/or your fan base to Above the Line: Practical Movie Reviews for my review of Ghost Writer - to see where we match up or part ways.

Hello..this is my first visit to your site, some stumbling I guess in the wee hours, clicking links to links of other links, and well, here I am. A movie reviewer myself, with my own blog (see note below) I wanted to comment on your comment about Inception. I must admit I am a bit baffled by the reaction to this film, being one of a handful who not only disliked the film but are passionate about said reaction. Yet at the core of my review, and what I feel is an informed opinion from the perspective of a film enthusiast and a filmmaker, is the evidence to back up my summation that Inception serves the following:

In this day and age of cinema, one thing is certain; once you’ve collected the keys to the kingdom of Hollywood you are essentially granted a pass to write whatever muddled script you want and like a giant horse on wheels with a sinister agenda, people are going to take it in and regret the price of admission - even if that regret comes on later, like a hangover.

I really do invite you to read my review for an alternative approach to the film. I didn't set out to write something different but as it turns out that is exactly what I did.

kind regards,
rory
